To the Seacoast Community
It is with a mixture of despair and outrage that Seacoast Outright adds our voice to those demanding an end to injustice and violence against the Black community. The recent murders are not random acts, but a reflection of our systemic, culturally embedded racism, enabled by our institutions of power. Horribly, there seems to be no end in sight.
The violent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery (and past victims too numerous to count here), have once again pushed us off our comfortable sidelines. To remain there only makes us complicit. We must seek justice, equality, and accountability in a country that has made little effort to repair the wrongs done to the Black community. The LGBTQ community knows what it means to fight for liberation, and to mourn the murders in our own community (including 12 transgender people of color in 2020 so far). We must be diligent in dealing with racism within our own community, and at the same time, fight alongside the nationwide anti-racism movement led by Black Lives Matter.
We will join this fight in whatever way we can: talk, write, share, post, put out signs, make art, protest. We also pledge to work across the many interlocking levels of systemic injustice including economic equality, healthcare access, climate change, and housing and to challenge all systems that disproportionately affect people of color in our country.
We stand with Black Lives Matter. We dedicate our Pride to you.
